Extreme Heat for Battle of Flowers Parade and Fiesta

If you are going out to enjoy the festival this weekend remember to bring some water because it is going to be a scorcher! And if you find that it’s getting too hot for you there is no shame in coming back to your fully-furnished apartment at Dwelling Suites and cranking the AC!

http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local/article/Heat-advisory-issued-ahead-of-Battle-of-Flowers-11103594.php?ipid=brkbarCity issues level 3 heat advisory ahead of Battle of Flowers parade – San Antonio Express-News The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District has issued a high-level heat advisory for Friday and Saturday, where temperatures are expected to be in the mid-90s for the Battle of Flowers Parade and other Fiesta activities.

The heat index will be between 90 and 108 degrees for two consecutive days, making the notice a level III advisory, a Metro Health news release states.

The Battle of Flowers parade will wind its way through downtown San Antonio around noon Friday, when the National Weather Service projects it to be 94 degrees.

Food and music was the order of the evening Friday, April 21, 2017, in San Antonio’s central suburb Alamo Heights for Fiesta’s Annual Alamo Heights Night. All the usual suspects abounded, from funnel cakes and turkey legs to sausage on a stick and gorditas.

“Particularly with all the Fiesta activities taking place on Friday and Saturday, it is imperative that people drink plenty of water to prevent complications from the heat,” said Dr. Vincent Nathan, Metro Health assistant director.

Locals began claiming prime parade spots as early as Monday morning, and sightings of chairs, campsites and bleachers have slowly appeared on Broadway throughout the week.

I stayed in dwelling suites for about six months last year and had a great experience! Not only are they reasonably priced, they’re located a little outside of Alamo Heights, which is a really nice area–and known to be very pricey to live.

The suites were very homey–didn’t feel like I was staying in an uncomfortable hotel. Nicely furnished, and had a comfy bed. Kitchen was stocked up on anything you needed to cook–which was nice not having to make last minute runs to the store for a strainer or can opener, or anything else you wouldn’t think to bring along.

I had a couple issues while there, one with internet connection and another with parking, which were resolved pretty much right away–so really weren’t much of an issue at all. Other than that, everything was good!

The staff was super helpful with anything I needed, and any issues I had were addressed right away. Totally made for a stress-free, enjoyable stay.

I would DEFINETLY recommend it, especially if you want to avoid paying an outrageous amount for anywhere else in the area!

Rest Easy In Your Fully-Furnished Dwelling Suite, Asteroid Is NOT Hitting Earth!

An asteroid is set to whiz by earth this Wednesday, April 19. All of our Dwelling Suites guests can rest easy in their fully-furnished suites though because there is no chance that it will hit the earth. If the clouds break, you might want to grab a telescope and look to the sky because the next close encounter won’t be until 2027. If you ask us that’s fine because it can be a little unsettling that a massive rock is speeding toward us.

http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local/article/Large-asteroid-to-whiz-by-Earth-Wednesday-11080568.phpLarge asteroid to whiz by Earth Wednesday – San Antonio Express-News NASA is confident the world will not be destroyed by a large asteroid that will pass Earth on Wednesday.

The asteroid is expected to pass safely at a distance of about 1.1 million miles, or about 4.6 times the distance from Earth to the moon.

The pass is the closest heavenly encounter since asteroid Toutatis, a 3.1-mile space rock, flew by 13 years ago. That asteroid came within four lunar distances from Earth.

“Although there is no possibility for the asteroid to collide with our planet, this will be a very close approach for an asteroid of this size,” according to NASA.

See what it would look like if an asteroid hit different U.S. cities, including San Antonio, in the gallery above.

Wednesday’s asteroid, roughly 2,000 feet wide, will approach Earth from the direction of the sun and will become visible in the night sky after Wednesday. NASA says it’s predicted to brighten to about magnitude 11, when it could be visible in small optical telescopes for one or two nights before it fades as the distance from Earth rapidly increases.

Sky and Telescope says “because of its size and proximity, it will be bright enough to spot in a small, backyard telescope and moving fast enough to see in real time.”

Even if you have a decent telescope and know where to look – rolling west across Coma Berenices – mostly cloudy skies will hide its passage in the night sky.

The next close encounter with an asteroid will be in 2027 when the half-mile-wide asteroid 1999 AN10 will fly by at one lunar distance, about 236,000 miles. Read more…

Albert Reyes grows strawberries near Poteet, Texas. Much of his strawberry crop will sell at the annual Poteet Strawberry Festival.

Festival crowds grew from 5,000 in its first year to an estimated 100,000 visitors over three days.

In 2015, Poteet was officially dubbed the “Official Strawberry Capital of Texas” by the Texas State Legislature.
